Siyavula - Open Resources in IT and CAT (Northern Suburbs)

Evening sessions with Siyavula at the Experilab, Bellville

Siyavula is hosting a series of evening events in the coming weeks and you are invited! These events will be taking place in the Northern Suburbs, and are a repeat of the events on Open Education Resources that we hosted last year. We aim to give you an exciting demonstration of the open resources available, the tools we have been experimenting with and the work of innovative educators elsewhere. We will provide snacks and drinks and the opportunity for you to connect informally with other professionals in your field.

Background

Siyavula is a Shuttleworth Foundation seeded project which supports the development of local curriculum-aligned Open Education Resources (OERs) and communities of educators sharing and collaborating. All our activities focus on the open sharing of educational resources (www.siyavula.org.za) and include a selection of free and open FET Science and Mathematics textbooks (www.fhsst.org), openly licensed GET learner workbooks, a rich library of on-line resources (http://siyavula.cnx.org/lenses/siyavula) and an open assessment bank called FullMarks (www.fullmarks.org.za), for the sharing and accessing of test and exam questions with answers.

List of sessions

The series of events comprises an opening session relevant to all educators, and 5 sessions aimed at specific learning areas. All educators are welcome to attend any session and we hope to see most educators at the opening as well as at their subject related session.

Cost: Free, but only 25 spots available to the first educators that sign up.

February 17th: Open Resources in IT and CAT (Northern Suburbs)

We have a fun and hands-on evening planned for IT educators. We will explore the differences between Java and Python, argue for a healthy dose of visual programming before touching on syntax and why starting in earlier grades is beneficial. We invite educators in IT, CAT or any other subject to come and join us for an exciting glimpse into this world, and includes snacks and socialising.
